Hi all,
I was wondering about the unzip program that comes with xp. When i got this computer, I didn't know xp already had an unzip utility, else i wouldn't have installed it. I'm tempted to uninstall winzip, because i never could make files unzip in to the folder where they're suppose to go. Ialways had to let them install in the default unzip folder, then copy them to the clip board, find the folder where they were supppose to go, then paste them in there. So is the unzip utility easier than winzip? I guess i don't really need all th eother stuff winzip can do, I just got it, because it seemed like more and more programs were zip files, so i needed an unzipfolder to unzip them. I never saw the unzip program in the programs list,, which is one reason why i never knew xp had it.

that program isn't very good since the compression is very poor. winzip is much better in that regard, and you can change the folder in the extract dialog

I'm a WinRAR fan myself. it supports the zip format, too.

I've never been able to find any extract option in winzip to unzip scripts in a certain folder. I was just wondering because i'm considering downloading the winkit file from jim kitchens site so I could download a few games from there, but didn't know what folder to extract them in. I was told you could unzip them in any folder.

Actually, I think the install of winkit will default to a kitchensink folder in your program folders. Yes you can change it, but why do it, then you'll have to change it for any other games you download.

As far as zip utilities, I personally use icios which came with some download I got a long time ago and inserted itself as the default zip/unzip program. Icios and I get along okay, so I didn't do anything about its intrusiveness (though I usually think this is bad manners for a program).

Occasionally, I'll use the unzip utility that comes with xp, though Rat might be right about the compress utility not being the best around.

thanks green dragon slayer, actually, the only problem i have with winzip is I've never been able to make it put scripts in the folder I need them to go in. for example, when idownload some jaws scripts, i can't find any option to extract the files to th efolder of your choice, in this case,c:jfw60enu. I can't find the backshash on this computer for some reason, lol. Anyway, i think there is an edit field to type in the folder path, but it still won't put them in the folder i choose, so I have to let them install in the unzip folder, then copy them and then find the folder, then paste them in. Rat, winzip is doable for unzipping files that have to be unzipped, but the reason i hesitated to uninstall it and use the windows utility is because, if for some reason, it doesn't work well, then i'd have to reinstall winzip, and it's a pain to install from the cd after you buy it, because, the install button isn't accessible with jaws, and it can't find it, so i had to let my mom use the mouse to click on it.

Why use all these other unzipping utilities when XP has one? I've always just used the XP utility, and found it easier to work with than any of the other programs.
